The Futureheads Project aims to help young people aged 15 – 21 by supporting them to make positive decisions about their futures and to access employment, education, training and volunteering opportunities. The project, funded by Fairer Scotland, is now in its second year. During this time we have had the opportunity to engage with local young people using a range of methods including group work in schools, open access drop-in sessions and individual support work. Young people involved in the project have enjoyed the re-launch of the Senior Drop-in at the Citadel, and with the number of young people attending this club increasing at a rapid rate we can expect its popularity to keep on growing!
The project has been successful in developing and maintaining positive relationships between young people and staff, and as a result young people have become more confident to express, realize and achieve their full potential. We are delighted to see young people we have worked with go on to access some fantastic opportunities including college courses, training initiatives, paid full and part time employment and volunteering. We would also like to acknowledge the achievements of those involved in the Trinity group work programme for their success in carrying out a live project task – catering for over 100 people at the Leith Neighbourhood Partnership in November 2009.
The months ahead will continue to be a busy time for the Futureheads Project. Plans include delivering new group work programmes to fourth year pupils in Trinity, Leith and Drummond high schools; a new lunchtime drop-in for school leavers and unemployed young people aged 15 – 21; the continuation of individual support appointments; and a large scale careers event in early 2011. Through doing these activities we hope to help more young people gain a better understanding of the options available to them at this transitional time in their lives, and support them to achieve their goals in relation to employment, education and training.

The Citadel has developed a self-esteem/confidence building resource called Girl Zone which has been delivered in 2 local high schools. The 14 week programme of sessions is aimed to raise the participant’s awareness of their own self-esteem and of how they and others can affect their confidence. The programme of activities and group work include a variety of fun and innovative ways to work with the subject of self-esteem. Evaluations from both groups have proved that it not only increased the girl’s self-esteem but made them more aware of how their actions and behaviours affect others. It is hoped to roll out this project to other high schools and to local youth groups in autumn 2010.

New Spin is an exciting new intergenerational project that started at the Citadel in January 2010. It works to offer over 50’s and young people in Leith the opportunity to try new activities together, build friendships and share skills.
We have had a busy and fun filled first few months; we have done a wide variety of activities including weekly sessions of arts and crafts, bowls, and jewellery making. We’ve also had BBQs as well as trips out to places all over Scotland. All aimed at bridging the generation gap in Leith and increasing understanding between older and younger people.
We also have a weekly intergenerational Café on Friday afternoons where we have a mixed programme of activities that happen around plenty of tea’s, coffee’s and snacks.

The Citadel Youth Centre has run a Young Mum's group for the past 2 years. This group encourages participants to take part in a variety of activities which develops them socially and physically and we have lots of fun. The mums who attend range from 16-21 years. We have lots of fun and the group is very supportive to each other. In the past we have completed a baby and child first aid course and baby massage sessions. Each week has a different activity but we always have time for chat and to have a nice lunch. We have excellent crèche workers so that your baby or child is in a safe and happy environment.
